Niggle longs only to complete his painting of a tree, which seems to grow as he works on it, leaf by leaf, but he must leave on a journey and is prevented from finishing.
First appeared in the Dublin Review in January 1945. Usually published together with his essay "On Fairy-stories" under the title Tree and Leaf.
