Biography's Source:

When Alison Croggon was ten years old, her big ambition was to write a fantasy novel. She blames her father for absently leaving out a paperback copy of The Lord of the Rings. I sat up all that night reading and read it all the next day, until I had finished it. Then I started reading it again.

She worked as a journalist until she was 25, working for the now defunct Melbourne Herald, and was utterly miserable. She resigned in 1985 to concentrate on her poetry and her first child. Her first book of poems was published by Penguin Books in 1991 and won a few awards. She now writes plays, operas, poems and criticism as well.

It wasn't until her son was old enough to read The Lord of the Rings himself that she remembered fantasy, and her old ambitions. She read the The Lord of the Rings again, and the rest was history.
