Michael Ayrton was a multi-talented Englishman who worked as painter, sculptor, and art historian; draftsman, stage designer, and book illustrator; documentary film-maker and novelist. He published a collection of essays, and written widely on art history, drawing, and works of individual artists. He scripted and co-directed documentary films on the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci and on ancient Greek sculpture.
