Daniel Defoe (1660-1731), whose place in English literature is assured with Robinson Crusoe, was actually a man of many and varied interests -- not the least of these being the occult and the "unseen world." His famous ghost story, The Apparition of One Mrs. Veal has stood the test of time admirably and students of the supernatural will find much of value in his Essay on the History and Reality of Apparitions. In this work, he states categorically: "I must tell you, good people, he that is not able to see the devil, in whatever shape he is pleased to appear in, he is not really qualified to live in this world, no, not in the quality of a common inhabitant."
