Jabra Ibrahim Jabra, born in 1919, is an Arab novelist, poet, and critic, one of a group of writers who have endeavored to give Arabic writing a contemporary voice. Although most of his work is in Arabic, he has written a good deal of poetry and prose in English and has published in English-language magazines.

Jabra was educated at the Arab College, Jerusalem, and at Fitzwilliam House, Cambridge. He taught English literature in Jerusalem until 1948, and then in Baghdad until 1952. After study at Harvard University, he jouned the staff of an oil company operating in Iraq, where he had worked on a number of documentary films. Hes favorite occupation, when he is not writing, is painting, and he is closely associated with the new powerful art movement in Baghdad. He is married and has two sons.
