Matsuo Bashō. 1644-1694.

The most famous haiku poet in Japanese history, in his teens Bashō served Tōdō Yoshitada as a samurai retainer. His master Yoshitada studied haiku with Kitamura Sogin and called himself Sengin. During his Period, Bashō began to study haiku. When Sengin died at the age of twenty-five, Bashō left samurai life. His deep humanity, intense observation of the natural world, and depth of spirit combined to elevate the haiku tradition to its epitome.
