1913-1980
Muriel Rukeyser was born in New York City. Her first book, Theory of Flight (1935) was a Yale Younger Poets winner. Her other books of poetry include The Gates (1976), Breaking Open (1973), The Speed of Darkness (1968) and Out of the Silence: Selected Poems (1992). Among her books of prose is the recently reissued classic The Life of Poetry, first published in 1949.
