Lisel Mueller was born in Hamburg, Germany. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Alive Together: New and Selected Poems (1996). Her many other books of poetry include Waving from Shore (1989); Second Language (1986); and The Need to Hold Still (1980). She lives in Chicago.
