Slawomir Mrozek was born in Bozerin, near Cracow, in 1930. He studied architecture, painting, and Orientalism for a few terms. His first job was on a Cracow newspaper as a writer and cartoonist. While still a journalist, he began to write satirical short stories and it was with a first collection of these, The Elephant, that he achieved an early success. These stories were followed by others, and by a book of cartoons, Poland in Pictures. He abandoned journalism in the late fifties and his first play, The Police, was first performed in 1958. Eight more short plays followed before he wrote Tango, his first full-lenght play, first performed in 1964.
