Biography:

Daniil Kharms was born in St. Petersburn in 1905. His real name was Yuvachev, but he liked to use various pseudonyms; Kharms was the one under which he wrote most often. Kharms was the leading member of the avant-garde literary group called Oberiu, and he wrote in Leningrad during the late 1920's and 1930's with no hope of publication. He was arrested just before World War II and died in prison in 1941 or 1942. His manuscripts continue to be privately circulated in Eastern Europe, where George Gibian discovered them and translated a number of Kharms' stories and a play, Elizabeth Bam, along with works of Alexander Vvedensky in the book Russia's Lost Literature of the Absurd.
