Edmond Jabès was born in Cairo in 1912. Being Jewish, he has to leave Egypt at the time of the Suez crisis. He now lives in Paris, where he received the Prix des Critiques in 1970. One of his books, Elya, has already appeared in English, and another, The Book of Questions, is being prepared for publication.
