Cecil Helman was born in 1944 in Cape Town, South Africa, the grandson of rabbis. He graduated as a medical doctor at the University of Cape Town in 1967. Since then he has been self-exiled from South Africa and has lived in London. He has studued anthropology at the University of London, and at various times he has been as ship's doctor, illustrator of children's books, picture salesman, astronomer, and museum guide. His collection of parables, as yet unpublished, is titled The Revolution of the Pin-Ball Machines.
