Antonin Artaud was born in Marsailles in 1896. In 1920 he came to Paris and took part in the Surrealist movement and was also active as a stage and film actor. In 1927 he broke with Surrealism and developed his idea of the Theatre of Cruelty. In 1936 his experiments with peyote left him in a shaken condition, and for the next ten years he had many stays in mental hospitals. His most notable play is The Cenci, and he is the author of several works relating to the theatre. An edition of his Collected Writings has been published in London, and his primary nontheatrical writings were collected in America in the Artaud Anthology. Artaud died in 1948.
