Biography:

Matthew Stadler grew up in the North end of Seattle. When he was 17 he left to work for a Quaker lobbying group in Washington DC. He studied political theory at Oberlin College and began playing music with friends in a group called Food. Food moved to Seattle in 1981 and Matthew Stadler continued playing with them and with the groups Truth Decay and The Horrible Truth. Food moved to New York City in 1982. In New York Matthew Stadler began writing fiction and teaching high school. He wrote a novel, moved to Holland, went broke, then returned to Seattle where he eventually wrote three more novels. They have all been published and Matthew Stadler has been awarded a number of prizes for his work. In Seattle, he was the first Books Editor for The Stranger. He has since moved to Astoria Ore. and Portland (where he lives with his friend Linea King and their son Mikko) and become literary editor of Nest Magazine, a quarterly of interiors that has also won many prizes. His interest in Clear Cut [where he works as an editor] began when he realized that all of the best work he was reading was unpublished.
