Born and raised in the Maritimes, Joan Clark lived for over twenty years in Western Canada before returning to the east and settling in Newfoundland, the setting for this novel. The Victory of Geraldine Gull, published in 1988, won the Canadian Authors' Association Award for fiction and was nominated for the Governor General's Award. Her other fiction includes From a High Thin Wire and Swimming Toward the Light. She is also the author of many children's books, including The Dream Carvers, which was the winner of the Geoffrey Bilson Award for historical fiction. Joan Clark has been the recipient of the Marian Engel Award and the Canada-Scotland Exchange Award. She lives in St. John's.
