Stevie Smith was born Florence Margaret Smith in Hull, England. For 30 years she worked for a publisher in London; she also did work for the BBC. She began publishing poems in the 1930s, often with her own illustrations, and went on to write three novels and eight volumes of poetry. Her life was the subject of Hugh Whitemore's play Stevie and the subsequent 1978 film.
