1884-1958
German novelist and playwright. As a Jew, he was interned by the Vichy government while living in France, but escaped to the United States and lived there until his death. His most famous novel is Jud Süß ( Jew Süss, 1925), a world-wide bestseller. Other writings include the autobiographical Erfolg ( Success, 1930), Moskau ( Moscow, 1937), and the novel Unholdes Frankreich ( The Devil in France, 1941). He collaborated with Bertolt Brecht on several plays.
