1884-1958
German novelist and playwright. As a Jew, he was interned by the Vichy government while living in France, but escaped to the United States and lived there until his death. His most famous novel is Jud S (Jew Sss, 1925), a world-wide bestseller. Other writings include the autobiographical Erfolg (Success, 1930), Moskau (Moscow, 1937), and the novel Unholdes Frankreich (The Devil in France, 1941). He collaborated with Bertolt Brecht on several plays.
