German writer. He began his career as a poet, with a collection of satires, Fabelbuch (A Book of Fables, 1901) and a biography of Edgar Allan Poe (1905). His novels include Der Zauberlehrling (The Sorcerer's Apprentice, 1909), Alraune (1911), and Vampir (Vampire, 1921). Of his several collections of short stories, only a part of one has been translated into English, under the title Blood (1930). Ewers also wrote the screenplay for the German expressionist classic, Der Student von Prag (The Student of Prague).
