1922-2003

Hans Bemmann was born in 1922, the son of an evangelist Lutheran. His medical studies in Vienna were interrupted by the outbreak of war, and je enlisted with the army medical service. In 1945 he began studying music and German literature at Innsbruck University and obtained a doctorate. He joined the Catholic Church in 1949 and became assistant librarian at the Jesuit College in Innsbruck, a post he held until 1954. He has been a newspaper editor and lecturer, and taught at Bonn University from 1971 until 1983.

Hans Bemmann published his first novels under a pseudonym. The Stone and the Flute (Stein und Flöte) was published in Germany in 1983 under his own name and was an immediate success. His is also the author of Erwin's Bathroom (Erwins Badezimmer, 1984), Star of the Brothers (Stern der Brüder, 1986), and The Broken Goddess (Die beschädigte Göttin, 1990)
