William Carleton (1794-1869) rose from a humble background -- he was one of a poor farmer's fourteen children -- to a position of pre-eminence in Irish letters. Dogged for much of his life by money troubles, he nevertheless wrote widely on Irish life and customs; of his famous collection, Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry, a contemporary critic said "there is nothing in Irish literature within reasonable distance of them for completeness, variety, character-drawing, humour, pathos and dramatic power."
