Biography:

Giraldus Cambrensis ("Gerald of Wales") c.1146- c.1223. Medieval clergyman and historian, author of Topographia Hibernica.

Giraldus Cambrensis wrote one of the earliest and still most famous works on the history and people of Ireland, the Topographia Hibernica. Born in Wales, he entered the church as a young man and earned rapid recognition, becoming first royal chaplain and later preceptor to Prince John. In 1185, he accompanied the Prince to Ireland and there began work on his study of the island. He observed and recorded many of the strange customs, and also briefly skirted the areas of fantasy and myth.
