Jakov Lind was born in 1927 in Vienna. He was evacuated to Holland for safety in 1938. At the time of the German invasion he obtained false papers under the name of Jan Overbeck, returning to Germany as a deckhand on a Rhine barge. At the end of World War II he emigrated to Palestine, but returned to Europe a few years later. His first book, Soul of Wood, was an international literary sensation and was translated into fourteen languages. His subsequent books include two novels, Landscape in Concrete and Ergo, and three volumes of autobiography, Counting My Steps, Numbers, and The Trip to Jerusalem.
