H. C. Artmann was born in Vienna in 1921. His first writings were detective stories he passed out at school under the pseudonym of John Hamilton. In 1940 he was drafted into the German army, and the next year he was wounded. He wrote poems and prose in a military hospital and returned to the war in 1943. In 1945 he was taken prisoner in Regensburg and had access to a library which contained works of the pre-Expressionists, Expressionists, and Dadaists. He returned to Vienna in October, 1945, and in the next few years gave successful readings on Radio Vienna. In 1962 he returned to Berlin, where the play Dracula, Dracula was performed. He is the author of five collections of poetry and short prose, none of which has yet appeared in English.
