Stephen Crane was born in New Jersey and raised in upstate New York. As a New York City reporter, he wrote his novel Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, but could not find a publisher for it. Without any first-hand knowledge of war, he wrote The Red Badge of Courage, which made him famous. He later reported on combat in Greece and Cuba.
