Peter Sís, born in Brno, Czechoslovakia, in 1949, was an award-winning filmmaker when he took asylum in the U.S. after the 1984 Winter Olympics. With the help of Maurice Sendak, he began a new career as a childrens' book author and illustrator, and is considered one of the top illustrators in the field. He illustrated the 1986 Newbury award winner, and has won Caldecott and Horn Book Honors and many New York Times awards.
