Educated in London at the Jewish Free School, Zangwill began a career as a journalist and founded a humourous magazine, Ariel. After meeting Herzl who visited London, Zangwill became a firm proponent of the Zionist cause. He wrote several plays and some successful novels including Children of the Ghetto (1892). His other works include Dreams of the Ghetto (1898), Merely Mary Ann (1893), The Melting Pot (1914), The Principle of Nationalities (1917), and Chosen Peoples (1918).
