(1948 - ) American science fiction author, born Joan Carol Dennison in Baltimore, Maryland.
Attended San Diego State University, received BA w/high honor. Degree in anthropology, with interests in mythology and mythological archetypes.
Her first published story (Tin Soldier) in 1978 was based on a Hans Christian Andersen classic. Andersen's influence is also apparent on her second Hugo Award-winning novel The Snow Queen.
Other works include The Summer Queen and Psion. Vinge received a degree in anthropology (with highest honors) from San Diego State University. The study of that subject has been very useful in her writing science fiction, Vinge says; both off fresh viewpoints for looking at human behavior. Her novelette Eyes of Amber won the Hugo Award as well; and she has been a finalist for several other Hugo and Nebula awards.
Married author Vernor S. Vinge in 1972, but divorced in 1979. Has since remarried science fiction editor Jim Frenkel. Currently lives in Madison, Wisconsin.
