1870-1953. English essayist, historian, novelist and poet. He was born in France of an English mother and a French father, but educated in England. His most famous works are the Bad Child's Book of Beasts (1896), The Four Men (1912) and his biographies of Napoleon (1932) and Cromwell (1934).
