Heinrich von Kleist was born in Frankfurt in 1777. He was a dramatist and short story writer. Several translations of his story "Michael Kohlhaas" are available in English, and one collection of his other stories has appeared, entitled The Marquise of O. Kleist killed himself as part of a suicide pact in 1811. He has had great influence on later generations of writers, including Kafka.
