Biography:
Patricia Highsmith was born Mary Patricia Plangman but took her stepfather's name when she began writing mysteries such as Strangers on a Train (1950) which Alfred Hitchcock filmed in 1951, and The Talented Mr. Ripley (1955) recently made into a movie. When The Price of Salt was published in 1952, she used the pseudonym Claire Morgan, and it wasn't until 1984 that she agreed to allow the book to appear under the name Highsmith. The Price of Salt is considered the first lesbian novel to have a happy ending.
