American poet and biographer of Abraham Lincoln, was born in rural Illinois of Swedish immigrant parents, and spent most of his early years as an itinerant labourer and journalist. He was in his thirties when his free verse, strongly influenced by Walt Whitman, first attracted public attention with the publication of Chicago Poems (1916). Sandburg was also an important early collector - and gifted performer - of American folksong; his The American Songbag was a landmark in the field. The bedtime stories Sandburg told his twon daughters were the basis of all three of his books for children: Rootabaga Stories (1922), Rootabaga Pigeons (1923), and Potato Face (1930).
