Biography's Source:

Born on Barbados in 1853. As a young woman she moved to England to study art, where she married William Clifford, a mathematics professor, in 1875. When he died four years later, leaving her poor and with two young daughters, she began to write to support herself. She was very successful and became the hostess of a London literary salon, where she met such novelists as Henry James and Rudyard Kipling. Her story "The New Mother", first published in Anyhow Stories, Moral and Otherwise (1882), has been suggested as one of the sources of Henry James's The Turn of the Screw. She died in 1929.
