Born in Bozeman in 1957, Russell Rowland is a fourth-generation Montanan. And like so many people who grew up there, his connection to this magical state has not weakened even though he has not lived there since 1985. After completing a bachelorís degree in Music Education in 1980, Russell spent the next couple of decades wandering through jobs and states across the union. He worked as a lounge lizard, a shoe salesman, a surveyor, a bookkeeper, and an editor. After a stint in the U.S. Navy, Russell completed a masterís degree in Creative Writing at Boston University, where he studied with Sue Miller (The Good Mother and While I Was Gone). Russellís parents remain entrenched in the snowy confines of Billings, Montana. His brother Wade lives in Austin, and his sister lives in San Francisco. His son Fletcher recently became an Eagle Scout and a high school graduate, and has started his college classes.
