Biography:

Matthew Phipps Shiel (1865-1947) was the author of many novels which have been described as a "triumph over the English language" for the color and effectiveness of his almost magical prose style. Shiel, who lived in Sussex, England, was the King of Redonda. He was a prolific writer, the author of almost forty books, the creator of Prince Zaleski and Cummings King Monk, who occupy a small niche in the panoply of the foremost sleuths in the field of detection, and he wrote some of the most memorable macabre fiction of his time. The best of Shiel's short stories are to be found in The Pale Ape and Other Pulses, Here Comes the Lady and Prince Zaleski. The best of his novels are The Lord of the Sea, The Purple Cloud, The Yellow Danger, How the Old Woman Got Home, and Dr. Krasinski's Secret.
