Born in Buffalo, New York, Mr. Williams was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, and the Art Students League. Several years in show business as an entertainer and stage manager were followed by four years as an assistant press agent for the group Theater and then service with the 65th Infantry Division.
