William Heinesen is the Faroese writer who is best known abroad. He grew up in Tórshavn, and as the eldest son of a merchant he was sent to Copenhagen to attend a commercial school. But he preferred to write and draw and very soon he began to experiment as an artist. His first collection of poems was published in 1921 in Copenhagen. He returned home and lived for the rest of his life in his native city. After the first social novels from the 1930s this little capital in the middle of the ocean gradually became the main subject in his novels and short stories. Tórshavn is to him both the navel of the world and the tower at the end of the world. His works have been translated into some twenty different languages, he was presented with several litarary prizes and was nominated for the Nobel prize.
