Born November 25, 1951 in Cartegena, Spain, Arturo Pérez-Reverte began his writing life as a war correspondant reporting on conflicts in The Middle East, Central America, Eastern Europe and Africa. Between 1973 and 1994 he spent 12 years writing for the spanish daily newspaper Pueblo and 9 years working for spanish television (TVE) covering these conflicts. In 1986 he published his first novel El Husar, followed by El Maestro de Esgrima (The Fencing Master) in 1987. International acclaim was soon to follow. His books have been translated in 28 languages and published in 50 countries. He currently resides in Madrid where he writes novels full-time and continues (since 1991) to write an opinion column for XLSemanal a popular supplement included in 25 spanish newspapers. The Captain Alatriste series which he completed (5 novels 1996-2003) are currently being translated into english editions and a spanish language film of the series is to be released in the U.S. December 2006 and stars the multi-lingual Viggo Mortensen as Captain Diego Alatriste.

Extras
  • For El Capitán Alatriste ( the first book in the series ) he gave co-author credit to his daughter Carlota, who helped him with research and was only 14 at the time.
  • Arturo Pérez-Reverte was elected to the Spanish Royal Academy in 2002.
