Biography's Source:

George MacDonald (18241905) was a prolific writer, yet it is his fantasies for children that have survived. A minister of the Congregational church, MacDonald resigned after a disagreement with his deacons and from 1853 earned his living by lecturing and writing.

The great nineteenth-century innovator of modern fantasy came to influence not only C. S. Lewis but also such literary masters as Charles Williams and J. R. R. Tolkien. His books include Lilith, Phantastes and The Gifts of the Child Christ and Other Stories and Fairy Tales.
