Jacques Barzun (b. 1907) arrived in the United States in 1919. As writer, historian and literary critic he spent an influential thirty years, from 1945 to 1975, on the faculty of Columbia University in New York City, and continues as an important and beloved figure in the worlds of literature and academe.
