Joseph Conrad was originally known as Konrad Koreniowski. He was born in 1857 in Poland, which was then under Russian rule. He joined the Merchant Marine in 1874 as an apprentice. In 1886, he became a British Subject, and in 1894 he became a Master Mariner. He married Jessie George in 1895. He died in 1924.
