Octavus Roy Cohen (1891-1959), born in Charleston, S.C., was known for his Negro dialect stories as well as detective fiction; his stories were popular in magazines such as Liberty, Collier's, Redbook, and The Saturday Evening Post. His detective creations include the immaculately dressed Florian Slappey, beau of Birmingham and Harlem, and the obese, uncouth, easy-going country private eye Jim Hanvey, portrayed in a 1937 Republic Pictures film by Guy Kibbee.
