(1925 - 2012)

An avid pulp-fiction reader and science fiction fan since the age of 13, Harrison was a founding member of the Queens chapter of the Science Fiction League. After a two year stint in the Army during WW2, he attended art colleges and worked as an illustrator for Galaxy and Marvel Stories magazines. He became a member of the Hydra Club, alongside such science fiction professionals as Isaac Asimov, Fredric Brown, Theodore Sturgeon, Lester del Rey, L. Sprague de Camp and sold his first short story in 1950, after which he veered from visual arts to writing and editing comics and science fiction.

His novels include The Stainless Steel Rat series, starring the intergalactic charming rogue 'Slippery Jim' diGriz; the West of Eden trilogy, and Make Room! Make Room!, which was adapted for the film Soylent Green. Among the 50 anthologies he has edited were The Year's Best SF.

He is a winner of the Nebula Award and the Prix Jules Verne, and a cofounder of SF Horizons - the first magazine of SF criticism - with Brian Aldiss. Organised the first International Science Fiction Authors Conference in Ireland, where he currently resides.
