Biography:

Lady Jane Francisca Speranza Wilde (1826-1896), now over-shadowed in literature by her son, Oscar Wilde, was nevertheless a distinguished and talented writer who for many years had the most famous salon in Dublin. Much of her life was devoted to collecting Irish folk tales and legends and these she published in numerous collections, the most notable being Ancient Legends, Mystic Charms and Superstitions of Ireland. Her retelling of these stories has provided invaluable source material for many writers, not least of these being Oscar Wilde himself.
