Biography:

American novelist. The son of Russian Jewish immigrants, he was born in Brooklyn in 1914. He attended City College and Columbia University, and supported himself by teaching high school until he was almost forty, when he began to write (or publish). His first novel, The Natural, was published in 1952, followed in 1957 by The Assistant. His fourth novel, The Fixer (1957), won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. His stories, which are often based on Jewish folk tradition, were collected in The Magic Barrel (1958) and Idiots First (1963). He died in 1986.
