Born in Breslau to a manufacturer and buyer in 1848, Lasswitz began studying mathematics and physics in 1866. In 1875 he received a doctorate in physics, and a professorship in 1884. He died in 1910 in Gotha.
Kurd Lasswitz is considered the father of the German Science Fiction novels. His works reflect a close following of the ideas and philosophies of Kant and Fechner.
