Elias Canetti was born in 1905 in Russe, Bulgaria. He moved from Bulgaria to Vienna at the age of six, and was educated in Vienna, Zurich, and Frankfurt. Since 1939 he has lived in England. He is the author of one novel, Auto-da-Fe, which may be described as a cross between Kafka and Cervantes. It is certainly one of the major novels of the century. He is also the author of one sociological study, Crowds and Power, and two plays, which he sometimes gives readings of, playing all the parts. Canetti's method in Crowds and Power has been described as "eclectic, poetical, sociological, anthropological and philosophical." As such, the book has not endeared itself to traditional sociologists, but has attracted a wide and diverse audience.
