Novelist and screenwriter Dalton Trumbo was born in Montrose, Colorado on December 9th, 1905. He went to the University of Colorado, and began his writing career for the Saturday Evening Post, McCall's Magazine, Vanity Fair, and The Hollywood Spectator. He switched to writing novels in 1935 with 'Eclipse' a satirical look about a self-made businessman, but came to the notice of Hollywood with the publication of his novel 'Johnny Got His Gun, and became a screenwriter in 1935. He wrote mostly 'B' films, but in 1940 he was handed his first 'A' film 'Kitty Foyle' for which he would earn his first Oscar nomination.

Brought before the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC), he was blacklisted and spent 11 months in prison in 1950. He was eventually taken off the black list and allowed to continue writing screenplays.

In 1982 he was interviewed for Victor Navasky's book 'Naming Names' a book about the HUAC hearings and those affected. He passed away on September 10th, 1986 of a heart attack.
