Jean-Paul Sartre was born in Paris in 1905. After graduation from the École Normale Supérieure in 1929 he taught for several years but gave up teaching in favor of an extended trip through Europe. During the war he served as a military observer in Alsace until he was taken prisoner by the Germans. After his discharge from the army Sartre returned to teaching, and his first play, the Flies, appeared soon after. It is No Exit, his second play, however, which is associated with the beginning of the intellectual movement called existentialism. After the liberation Sartre devoted himself entirely to writing. His works include novles, plays, essays, literary criticism, and countless articles, all of which have made a profound impression on the literary world. He died in 1980.
