Biography:
E. A. Poe (1809-1849) was born in Boston, Massachusetts in January 1809, the second son of two travelling actors. He soon was orphaned and ended up in England. He studied in both England and Virginia, where he later returned. Strained relations with his foster father forced him eventually to leave school and move to Boston, where he first started publishing poems. His literary reputation at the time of his death was greatest in France; it was years before his work was appreciated by American critics. Poe is buried in Baltimore.
