Born in Badajoz, Spain 1897 and died Faringdon, Oxfordshire 1957.

Born into poverty (his widowed mother supported her family as a river washerwoman), he held a variety of jobs after leaving school at 13 including office boy for a bank and patents registration officer. During the Spanish Second Republic, Barea helped organise the Clerical Workers Union and on the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War he organised a militia unit consisting of office workers. During the siege of Madrid, Barea broadcast to Latin America and acted as censor to the foreign press corp.

It was during the war that he met his wife Ilsa and on the collapse of the republic the couple made their way first to France and then England. From then until his death, Barea worked for the BBC's World Service's Spanish Section.
